Literaturarchiv Niederösterreich

The Literaturarchiv Niederösterreich (Documentation Center for Literature in Lower Austria) was founded in 1989. Its central task was to document Lower Austrian literature in its historical and contemporary dimensions. The original focus on collecting and cataloging primary literature, secondary literature as well as bio-bibliographical data on the authors was gradually replaced by the systematic acquisition of literary (pre-mortem) bequests and (post-mortem) estates. Comprehensive, self-contained collections of personal provenance give the collection its meanwhile grown profile. In addition, the documentation center made efforts to acquire archives from institutions such as literary journals and associations that have shaped or continue to shape the literary life of Lower Austria through publishing and organizing activities.

The collection holdings are continuously organized and digitally registered in order to make them accessible for scientific research as well as for mediation in exhibitions and publications issued by Literaturedition Niederösterreich.

In 2022, the collections of the Documentation Center were merged with The Archives of Contemporary Arts. The acquisition, processing and care of self-contained collections continue to be the core tasks of the collection.
