Biography
Peter Patzak was born in Vienna in 1945. He studied psychology, art history, and painting. In 1968, he was invited to New York to show his first film His Bag an experimental short, at the Films of Art show. From 1968 to 1970 he worked in New York on several experimental films and short films.
After his return to Vienna he made his feature film debut in 1973: The script for the film Situation was written by Oscar Bronner, the British actress Rita Tushingham played the leading role. In collaboration with Helmut Zenker, Peter Patzak made Austrian television history with the satirical crime series Kottan ermittelt, which was broadcast on Austrian National Television from 1976 to 1983.
Peter Patzak works as a director, producer, and screenwriter and has established himself as one of the most important Austrian filmmakers both at home and abroad. His extensive oeuvre includes literary adaptations (Das Einhorn, 1978), period movies (Gavre Princip, 1990), social commentary (Kassbach, 1979), and thrillers as well as documentary films for cinema and television.
Peter Patzak received multiple international awards for his cinematic work, including the Adolf Grimme Award, the Golden Romy, the Max Ophüls Award, and the director’s award at the Venice Film Festival for his adaptation of the novel Die Wasserfälle von Slunj, 2002.
From 2008 to 2013, Peter Patzak was Director of the Vienna Film Academy at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, where he held a professorship for directing from 1991 until his retirement in 2013.
Patzak has pursued his artistic starting point, the visual arts, since the 1960s and his works are shown in numerous exhibitions. Patzak’s literary publications include the 2005 novel Der Geist der Farbe, and the play Akte im Schweigen vermählt, which premiered in 2008.
Peter Patzak died on March 11, 2021 in Krems an der Donau.
